Webinar Presentation: Results from the CDIM and APDIM Spring Surveys on the 2020-21 Internal Medicine Virtual Residency Recruitment Process

Thursday, August 5, 2021
3:00PM-4:00PM EDT

Due to the SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) pandemic, the Academic Year (AY) 2020-21 internal medicine residency recruitment process was conducted virtually. To better understand that process and thereby help medical schools and residency programs prepare for the AY 2021-22 recruitment cycle, the CDIM and APDIM Survey and Scholarship Committees fielded parallel surveys of core clerkship (and sub-internship) directors and residency program directors, respectively, from March through early May 2021.

In addition to collecting data about medical student advising experiences, numbers of applications submitted/received, and numbers of interviews granted/accepted in AY 2020-21 compared to previous years, the Spring surveys studied undergraduate and graduate medical educators’ perceptions of the benefits and challenges of virtual recruitment. The CDIM survey also assessed the extent to which clerkships utilized the Alliance for Academic Internal Medicine Guidance for the 2020 - 2021 Virtual Residency Interviewing Season, and the APDIM survey assessed program directors’ opinions about applicant “preference signaling” as a means to attenuate residency program application inflation.
