USMLE Score Reporting

AAIM Board Responds to USMLE Step 1 Scoring Change

The Alliance Board of Directors has responded to the announcement from USMLE that score reporting for Step 1 would move from a three-digit numeric score to reporting only a pass/fail outcome. The change will begin no earlier than January 1, 2022. A numeric score will continue to be reported for Step 2 Clinical Knowledge (CK) and Step 3. Step 2 Clinical Skills (CS) will continue to be reported as pass/fail.

AAIM Responds to InCUS Recommendations

The Alliance has submitted its unified response to the recommendations from the Invitational Conference on USMLE Scoring. While allowing discussion of different perspectives of groups within the Alliance, the response emphasizes that the discipline’s most important priority is to train the best physicians possible to care for patients, which requires better tools to assess readiness and knowledge as well as a comprehensive plan to improve the UME-GME transition.

USMLE Score Reporting Recommendations from InCUS Now Available

The preliminary recommendations for USMLE score reporting—based on the March 2019 Invitational Conference on USMLE Scoring—are now posted online.

  • Reduce the adverse impact of the current overemphasis on USMLE performance in residency screening and selection through consideration of changes such as pass/fail scoring.
  • Accelerate research on the correlation of USMLE performance to measures of residency performance and clinical practice.
  • Minimize racial demographic differences that exist in USMLE performance.
  • Convene a cross-organizational panel to create solutions for the assessment and transition challenges from UME to GME, targeting an approved proposal, including scope/timelines by end of calendar year 2019.
